The Accuracy Obligation ensures that organisations use the correct and complete personal data of individuals in making decisions that affect the individual
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗢𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁?
The Accuracy Obligation is all about the conciseness and correctness of the personal data when it is:
a) likely to be used by the organisation to make a decision that affects the individual to whom the personal data relates; or
b) likely to be disclosed by the organisation to another organisation.
It requires organisations to make reasonable efforts in ensuring that the personal data that is used does not have any errors or needs further correction. This way, when a decision is made, it takes into account all of the relevant parts of accurate personal data.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗢𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱?
A breach on any of the PDPA obligations is an offence, and organisations may face a hefty fine. The maximum penalty is S$1,000,000 or 10% of the annual turnover, whichever is higher. This is why it is important to have a Data Protection Officer to oversee the cybersecurity hygiene of an organisation.
